What a fun bundle of a romance this was. Since her husband's death, Hattie Kavanaugh has done all she can to keep busy. She works for her in-law's home renovation company, but her latest purchase is proving to be more money pit than restoration. She feels horrible, and that's a big part of why she's agreeing to star in a new renovation TV show. She's there to renovate the house, get the cash, and be done with it. She didn't sign up to be part of the dating sideline the producer seems to be demanding.
When someone sets fire to a dumpster outside and then find the missing wallet from a decades-old cold case, there's clearly more to this home than Hattie imagined. It's getting harder to complete the task at hand when so many unexpected events keep occurring.
Part-mystery, part-romance, I loved the blend of home renovation, missing teacher, and current events with the arson, repeated pesky "noise violation" reports. It became a mystery/romance that was full of atmosphere, passion, and likable characters. I've enjoyed Mary Kay Andrews novels for awhile, and as this was part mystery - my favorite genre - I was hooked.

After her husband leaves her for their client, Ivy Perkins packs up everything and leaves Atlanta for an old North Carolina farmhouse she buys online. The Four Roses seems to be the perfect setting for starting over, even if it is more rundown than she expected.
Things start off with a bit of a hitch when Ivy finds the house is draftier than expected and the heating system isn't working, but her realtor/new neighbor helps her get things fixed and soon she's finding her home in this small town. It all starts with a mystery that she feels compelled to solve.
The former homeowners were the town's Santa and Mrs. Claus. Tucked in the pocket of the Santa suit is a letter from a little girl asking Santa to make sure her dad gets home safely from the war. Ivy has no idea how to track down this little girl who would now be a grown woman, but she has to know if the girl's dad came home for Christmas. By trying to uncover the girl's identity, Ivy ends up getting to know and love the town she is now calling home.
If you need an uplifting story, The Santa Suit is perfect. I loved the setting and was drawn to the different stories of the townspeople. I also was eager to see Ivy find a new life as she started over from the betrayal of her marriage. I was cheering her on from the start.

Letty Carnahan's sister always said that if anything bad happens, Letty needs to take her niece and run. After finding Tanya's body, Letty did as her sister asked. Tanya's dead, and Letty does as told. She knows exactly who killed her sister but going on the run with the child puts Tanya on the wanted list.
In Florida, Letty is trying to start a new life with four-year-old Maya. It's been a long drive, and she needs to rest. She hopes that the Florida motel parking lot where she's parked won't notice her. The owner's son, a police detective, does, but the Murmuring Surf Motel's owner, Ava, takes pity on her and offers her a room in the run-down storage unit. Eventually, it leads to a job.
It isn't long before Letty feels like she's one of the family. Ava is the mother Letty wished she had growing up, and Maya is doing incredibly well. Still, Letty knows that the ruthless real estate mogul who murdered Tanya is looking for them. He wants his daughter back and will do anything to find her.
Ava's son, Joe, has his eye on Letty. It doesn't take him long to realize she's on the run, but he's convinced that there's more to the story. He'll do what it takes to keep her safe, but first, he needs her to trust him.
Some stories have settings that draw you in and make you want to be part of the community. Murmuring Surf Motel did just that. I loved Ava and enjoyed seeing her meddle just enough to start to change Letty's life. I adored Maya and her innocence. Many of the motel's regulars endeared themselves to me. I wanted to join them.
The Newcomer is a touch of a suspense novel, but a clear romance with plenty of emotion. I loved it.
