I agree with so many of the tips and picked up a few I hadn't thought of. There are also a few points I would add. For destination weddings, my brother did it that way. I wanted the best for him, but I do admit that not being able to go to the wedding did sting a bit. That's something to keep in mind if you go that route. He eased it by doing a big party when they returned.
Also, when picking a cake and icing, consider your venue/location. I made a cake for a relative once. She'd asked for a tiramisu layer cake with marsala buttercream. It was a spectacular cake of seven layers that resembled a church and was topped with a steeple and glittery bells. I loved that cake. However, the bride's asked for the heat in the room to be set to 80 due to her elderly relatives. The frosting started to melt within minutes of guests arriving and adding body heat to the mix. The venue had to bring in dozens of fans and point them at the cake to keep it from melting completely.

When I got married almost 30 years ago, we tossed aside notions of an expensive wedding and got married in my parents' backyard. My mom made our cake. Family members prepared dishes to eliminate the cost of a caterer. Our expenses were the tent and chairs, the keg of beer and bottles of champagne, plastic glasses, and the plates and cutlery. Having a smaller backyard wedding may seem skimpy, but it was perfect for us and helped us avoid the financial strain I watched many friends face.
